New Look for Yellow Cabs?

by Kathleen Horan

NEW YORK, NY June 17, 2005 —Designers, taxi drivers and public officials gathered in Greenwich Village yesterday to discuss how taxis can be improved for both cabbies and riders.

REPORTER: The workshop looked at a range of technical upgrades, including how to better fit baby strollers and wheelchairs. Christopher Mount, with The Parsons School Of Design, says these improvements are easy to implement.

MOUNT: If we got more taxi stands, if we were able to call a taxi, if we got better cabs maybe in a couple of years when the old Crown Vics sort of wear out I think we'd all be better off.

REPORTER: The Taxi and Limousine Commission is accepting proposals for yellow cab upgrades. Ideas being considered include putting Global Positioning Systems in cabs to improve service.
