Charter Students Ace Statewide Tests

by Beth Fertig

NEW YORK, NY June 10, 2005 —Charter school students out-performed other New York City public school students, according to a breakdown of the latest state test results.

Out of 19 charter schools in New York City, 13 did better on the statewide 4th or 8th grade tests than the average for their local district.

Charter schools are public schools that are governed by their own non-profit boards. They're given more freedom in exchange for meeting annual performance targets. In addition to the statewide tests, which are required, 15 charters opted to take the citywide math and reading tests.

More than 60 percent of their students met or exceeded the standards. That compares to about 50 percent of students in other city schools, which posted record gains his year. Proponents of charter schools say this makes the case for urging the state to allow more of them to open.
