Trash Talk Stuck at East 91st Street
by Amy Eddings
NEW YORK, NY June 10, 2005 —Despite the City Council's recent rejection of a key element in Mayor Bloomberg's garbage plan, both the mayor and Council Speaker Gifford Miller say they're willing to talk....but the East 91st Street garbage station remains non-negotiable on both sides.
Miller sent Bloomberg a list of requests, including expanding recycling, legislating commercial garbage reductions in the South Bronx and Greenpoint-Williamsburg, and keeping the East 91st station closed.
Miller says he wants a plan that protects all New Yorkers, not just his district. The speaker has suggested sending Upper East Side trash to the West 59th Street station, which the mayor wants to reserve for commercial garbage. Miller's also suggested using the city tow pound pier at West 38th.
But mayoral spokesman Jordan Barowitz says cutting down commercial garbage capacity at West 59th will mean taking fewer trucks off the streets in the other boroughs. And he says the waterfront of the tow pound pier has been set aside for the Hudson River Park. For WNYC, I'm Amy Eddings.
