Stadium Vote May Have Crushed Olympic Bid

by Andrea Bernstein

NEW YORK, NY June 07, 2005 —NYC2012 officials are expressing dismay that New York's bid to host the 2012 Olympics may be mortally wounded.

Deputy Mayor Daniel Doctoroff has managed to be optimistic every step of the way. As late as yesterday morning, he was saying the controversy over the stadium showed a good side of New York -- that it is a vital democracy, home to many opinions.

But yesterday afternoon he was huddling with aides, saying only the rejection of the stadium has the potential to disrupt New York's entire bid. The Mayor and the Governor say they'll talk with Peter Ueberroth, head of the U.S. Olympic Committee, to try to salvage New York's bid before next month's crucial vote in singapore.

Among the options -- trying to win conditional approval of the west side stadium or vowing to continue to seek full approval.
