Citywide Gains in Math and English Scores

by Beth Fertig

NEW YORK, NY June 01, 2005 —Another batch of test scores is out, and once again New York City public school students showed big gains. Combined scores went up 14.4 percentage points on the citywide English exams and 7.5 percentage points in math.

The city's annual tests are given in grades 3, 5, 6, and 7. For the first time, more than half of all students met the standards. But fifth graders showed the biggest gains - with an increase of nearly 20 percentage points on their English tests and 15 points in math.

Mayor Bloomberg credited extra Saturday classes and his decision to stop promoting fifth graders who failed their exams. This was the same policy he introduced last year for third graders.

About 56-hundred fifth graders failed this year - nine thousand fewer than last year. They'll be held back unless they improve during summer school.
