Bellevue Chief Fired Over Improper Loan

by Fred Mogul

NEW YORK, NY May 25, 2005 —The city has fired the head of one of its flagship public hospitals, amid allegations of impropriety. WNYC's Fred Mogul has more.

REPORTER: In a brief statement, the Health and Hospitals Corporation said Carlos Perez, the executive director of Bellevue since 1997, was terminated for accepting, quote, "a personal loan from a vendor who transacts business with HHC."

Officials declined to say how much money Perez has received or who the vendor is because the investigation is ongoing. According to HHC, he admitted accepting money to investigators.

Under Perez, Bellevue recently completed a 115-million-dollar ambulatory care addition. He could not be reached for comment.
