Pataki Proposes Tougher Emission Standards
by Fred Mogul
NEW YORK, NY May 19, 2005 —Governor Pataki wants to impose tougher emission standards on manufacturers who sell cars in New York to reduce greenhouse gases. WNYC's Fred Mogul has more.
The proposed regulations call for auto-makers to modify different parts of vehicles, including transmissions and air-conditioning systems.
In 2003, Pataki first mentioned bringing standards like those in California to New York, and it's taken more than two years to draft a proposal. In a statement, Pataki said compliance with the law would reduce CO2 emissions by 15 million tons annually by the year 2020, and about 26 million tons a decade later.
The regulations would be phased in over 7 years, starting 2009. Public comment will occur at four sites around the state in early July.
