Bloomberg Says the City is Safe

by Chris Reilly

NEW YORK, NY May 05, 2005 —Two small explosions went off in a large cement planter outside a building housing the British Consulate on Third Avenue in Manhattan early today, causing some property damage but no injuries.

The police were called to the scene, at 845 Third Avenue, between 51st and 52nd streets, shortly before 4 a.m.; the blasts, occurred as voters went to the polls in Britain in a general election.

The small explosions shattered glass in the front door of the building. The Consulate is on the 9th and 10th floors of the buildings, which also houses other foreign-based offices.

This morning, Mayor Michael Bloomberg down-played the incident, saying New Yorkers should "go along with their lives." The Mayor says authorities don't know who did it, or any motive for the act, but he says he believes police will learn who did it.

Police Commissioner Ray Kelly says the devices were "novelty grenades" of the type that someone might keep on their desks. They were not real grenades, but were packed with powder, which has been taken for testing to a laboratory.

The devices were probably set off by a lighted fuse, and there's no indication that a timer had been used.
