Top Dems Launch Social Security Tour
by Fred Mogul
NEW YORK, NY March 04, 2005 —While President Bush spoke in New Jersey about overhauling Social Security, a group of top Democrats launched a four-city tour urging Americans to leave it alone.
Senior Citizens arrived by busloads and packed an auditorium at Pace University to hear Charles Schumer and Hillary Clinton and five other senators lambaste the president.
CLIINTON: It's not only a fight about Social Security. It's a fight about what kind of country we are and what kind of country we'll be. And we're going to fight and fight, until we make this clear to save Social Security for future generations.
Clinton was joined by Senator John Kerry and Senate Minority Leader Harry Reid, among others. All of them denied there is a Social Security crisis and said the fund will be solvent for decades.
Meanwhile, in New Jersey, the President said starting in 2018, Social Security will pay out more than it takes in.
