A Long Wait for C and A Lines
by Amy Eddings
NEW YORK, NY
January 25, 2005
—For a second day, commuters who rely on the C and A subway line had to contend with delays and crowded trains ... and they may have to for the foreseeable future. The Metropolitan Transportation Authority says it could take three to five years to fully rebuild a signal room near Chambers Street that was damaged by fire allegedly set by a homeless person on Sunday.
Mayor Bloomberg was asked about the subway system's vulnerability, especially after September 11th. "It's a constant challenge, when you have a system the size of this subway system, open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, how you guard against every possible intrusion. And I think what you see is, we're not doing as good a job as we should do," he said.
Mayor Bloomberg says he has not been fully briefed on the subway damage.
