Fire Damages A and C Trains
by Amy Eddings
NEW YORK, NY January 24, 2005 —Riders of the A and C trains can expect reduced subway service for what transit officials are calling "the foreseeable future." The problems are due to Sunday's fire at the Chambers Street station that spread to a signal room and severely damaged it. New York City Transit spokesman Kevin O'Connell says the A train will operate at forty precent of capacity for the next few days:
O'CONNELL: the commuters on the A should definately expect fewer trains for the foreseeable future. we're gonna go through a propcess where we're gonna try to increase the number of trains every day.
No "C" trains will operate for now. Transit officials say the signal room will take millions of dollars, and months, to fully repair. The A and C lines are some of the system's busiest.
