A Respite for Cabbies
by Richard Hake
NEW YORK, NY January 18, 2005 —Taxi drivers may want to cruise by the Jacob Javits Convention Center. The facility wants more cabs to pick up passengers on the far west side of Manhattan and its providing some incentive. WNYC's Richard Hake reports.
HAKE: A trailer is set up near the taxi line for drivers to relax, get hot coffee and a snack. Javits Center Spokesman Mike Eyesgrau says now that the facility is going to expand it needs to encourage more cabbies to pick up fares during the evening rush hour and it's providing them with an amenity that's hard to find a restroom.
EYESGRAU: That's just as important to many of them who told me as 250 or 500 dollars. A good rest stop is something to be desired.
HAKE: Drivers like Karam Sing pulled over and took a break on a warm comfy sofa.
SING: I like that. They should do something for cabbies because nobody is getting any favor to the cabbies. This is the first time I see it.
