NY's Battle Against the Big Box

by Amy Eddings

December 13, 2004 —The Battle against the Big Box Store is raging again, this time in Rego Park, where Wal-Mart announced last week it wants to open a 135-thousand square foot store by 2008.

But, unlike the Red Hook site of the recently approved IKEA or the East Harlem site of a proposed Home Depot and Costco, this Wal Mart would be near other large chains on Queens Boulevard, such as Sears and Target. So why are labor leaders and small business advocates mobilizing to stop Wal Mart? Anne Michaud, a reporter with Crain's New York Business, speaks with WNYC's Amy Eddings.
