New York City's Budget War

NEW YORK, NY April 18, 2002 — The budget war has now begun at City Hall. Yesterday, Mayor Bloomberg released his executive budget, revising earlier projections about the city's deficit. With a gap that's now grown to five billion dollars, the mayor says deep cuts are needed. But he still opposes the City Council's plan to avoid those cuts by raising taxes. WNYC's Beth Fertig has more on this first real showdown between the new mayor and the council.
