Federal Judge Rejects Lawsuit Against Willets Point Redevelopement

NEW YORK, NY November 26, 2009 —A federal judge has thrown out a lawsuit by businesses in Willets Point that tried to block the Bloomberg administration's redevelopment project. WNYC's Matthew Schuerman has the details.

REPORTER: The largest businesses in Willets Point Queens had banded together to keep the city from taking their property and turning the collection of junk yards and car repair shops into a mixed-use neighbourhood.

They said the city had willfully neglected the 60-acre area for decades by refusing to install sewers, sidewalks and other infrastructure. But Judge Edward Korman dismissed the lawsuit. He admitted it's quote - not a neighborhood that Mr. Rogers would recognize - but said the city's under no obligation to provide sewers in all neighborhoods.

The businesses are considering an appeal, according to to their lawyer, Michael Gerrard. The city still faces one other lawsuit, by another group, that challenges the process that led to the redevelopment's approval last year. For WNYC, I'm Matthew Schuerman.
