Senate Special Session Ended With No Deficit or Same-Sex Marriage Action
by Karen DeWitt
NEW YORK, NY November 11, 2009 —A special session of the New York state legislature ended with no action on reducing the state’s deficit, or legalizing same-sex marriage, but Governor Paterson says he’s determined to try again next week. Karen DeWitt reports from Albany.
REPORTER: Late in the day, after the legislature failed to agree on a plan to close the state's budget gap or vote on legalizing gay marriage, Governor Paterson said he was sending both houses home and trying for better luck next week.
PATERSON: We'll continue the dialogue. I'll probably have a leaders meeting or two in the interim and bring the legislature in Monday and Tuesday of next week to complete this deficit reduction program.
REPORTER: The Governor says he'll put the bill to legalize gay marriage on the special session next week as well. In Albany, I'm Karen Dewitt.
