Free Swine Flu Shots Start This Weekend
by WNYC Newsroom
NEW YORK, NY November 03, 2009 —Free swine flu vaccination clinics will open this weekend for the city's middle and high school students. Seven clinics will open this Saturday and Sunday. A total of 29 will open over the course of the next five weekends with each clinic remaining open for one weekend only to make sure the vaccine's availability is scattered throughout the city. The health department has assigned each city zip code to a particular clinic, but students can get vaccinated at any one of them. They will still need consent forms from their parents.
A Health Department spokeswoman says each site can handle up to 500 people an hour. It's not clear if demand will be anywhere near that high. During the first week of the program, focused on elementary school students, only 3,200 children came in for free vaccines. A list of vaccination sites is available by calling 311, or by going to the city's flu Web site.
