NEW YORK, NY October 30, 2009 —“Who Shot Rock and Roll” opens today at the Brooklyn Museum. It's the first major museum exhibition to acknowledge the role photographers played in ushering in the rock-and-roll revolution.

REPORTER: There's a photograph of an emotional Kurt Cobain weeping backstage, and Amy Winehouse sitting on the bed in a bra on her wedding day.

The photos reveal an uncommon intimacy between the photographers and their famous subjects. A rare image of James Brown surrounded by female fans was shot by a young Dennis Hopper.

Other photographs, like a series of Jimi Hendrix at the Monterey Pop Festival in 1967, are being exhibited for the first time. The show also includes music video work by photographers featured in the exhibition.

"Who Shot Rock and Roll" is on view at the Brooklyn Museum until January 31st.
