400,000 Jobless in NYC

by Ilya Marritz

NEW YORK, NY August 24, 2009 —The number of jobless people in New York City has topped 400,000, according to an analysis by City Comptroller William Thompson. That's the highest figure since 1992. The comptroller has also found a 70 percent increase in the number of New Yorkers who continue to work, but have had their hours cut.

Marcia Van Wagner, Deputy Comptroller for Budget, says that's a mixed blessing.

Van Wagner: It's better to have some job rather than no job at all and that does represent some flexibility in the economy. But it also doesn't get measured as unemployment, a lot of people don't really take it into account.

Van Wagner says more women than men have their working hours reduced. That could be because more women work in areas like health care and retail.
