Starrett City to Remain Affordable Housing
by Cindy Rodriguez
NEW YORK, NY July 29, 2009 —Governor Paterson signed off today on a deal that keeps Starrett City, in Brooklyn, affordable for middle and low income tenants. And resident Linda Tilton is breathing a sigh of relief.
TILTON: Everybody just loves living here. It's a wonderful place to live. The grounds are beautiful. We have beautiful trees. Everything is just nice and everybody wanted to stay here.
Starrett City's owners originally sought to sell the subsidized complex to the highest bidder, but that move was blocked by federal officials. The deal allows the owners to refinance for more than the original complex -- something that's typically not allowed for subsidized properties. In exchange, owners must set aside $40 million for improvements, and keep rents low for 30 years.
