Paterson Nominates New Head of MTA
by Matthew Schuerman
NEW YORK, NY July 14, 2009 —Governor Paterson's named his choice to head the MTA: Jay Walder, a McKinsey and Company consultant who already worked a stint at the MTA in the 1980s and 90s. WNYC's Matthew Schuerman has more.
This time, Walder will take over the combined positions of chief executive AND chairman.
The previous CEO, Lee Sander, was forced out after a bruising budget fight during which the state legislature questioned the MTA's credibility.
Walder told reporters at a press conference that one of the top priorities would be winning back the public's confidence.
WALDER: Any long-term solution to funding requires us as the MTA to show people that we are using the funding as efficiently and effectively as possible.
REPORTER: Walder didn't outline any specific financing ideas, although he promised to move forward with a system that the MTA is devising that will let riders use one fare card to transfer between the subway Metro North and Long Island Rail Road.
The State Senate has to approve the appointment before it becomes official.
For WNYC, I'm Matthew Schuerman.

Adding It Up
Community colleges are playing a growing role in American higher education. But their graduation rates have long been dismal. Students who enroll in community colleges tend to be poorer and less academically successful than students at four-year colleges. Most need remedial classes, especially in math. To see why math is such a hurdle, WNYC’s Beth Fertig spent the fall of 2009 visiting a class at LaGuardia Community College in Queens.
