Mayor Says Vendor Permit Laws Need Changes

by Ilya Marritz

NEW YORK, NY July 06, 2009 —Mayor Bloomberg concedes that the city health department needs to do a better job overseeing food vending permits after six people were arrested last week for selling their permits on the black market. Investigators believe at least 500 food vendor permits are probably held illegally. The mayor says part of the problem is that health inspectors are not allowed to take vendors' fingerprints.

BLOOMBERG: We can't prove that you were arrested the day before or the day before that, even if everybody recognizes you.

The mayor says his administration will work to make changes to the law governing street vendor permits.
