City Breaks Ground on Waterfront Park in Williamsburg

WNYC Newsroom

NEW YORK, NY July 06, 2009 —Mayor Bloomberg broke ground today on the first of three waterfront parks in Greenpoint-Williamsburg that were first promised when the city rezoned the Brooklyn neighborhood four years ago.

REPORTER: Bushwick-Inlet Park will eventually stretch six blocks along the East River. The first block, between North 9th and north 10th streets, will take two years to complete.

BLOOMBERG: It will be latest but not the last new park we're bringing to this part of Brooklyn and the latest but not the last waterfront park we're bringing to New York City.

REPORTER: The first part of the park will have a synthetic turf field that can be used for soccer, football and Quidditch, a sport inspired by the Harry Potter book series. The project will cost $30 million.
