NEW YORK, NY July 03, 2009 —The warring sides in the fight for control of the state Senate met behind closed doors with Governor David Paterson - and came out smiling. There's still no resolution to their leadership dispute, but as Karen DeWitt reports, senators don't seem to mind spending the holiday weekend in Albany.

Senators Pedro Espada and Malcolm Smith - both of whom claim the title of Senate Pro Temp of the senate - say the tone of their meeting with Governor Paterson, in contrast to the bitterness of recent weeks, was civil and professional.

"Negotiations went greatly. Firstly, we're going to be here for the July 4th celebration. Certainly we don't consider that punishment, anytime we get to celebrate together - and we will be celebrating together."

Afterwards, Espada said he offered a power sharing agreement in which the President Pro Temp would rotate every six months. He would take the first six months. The senators met once again in special session but passed no bills.
