Bloomberg's Local Parent Councils Technically Extinct

NEW YORK, NY July 02, 2009 —Now that the Board of Education has been restored, local parent councils created by Mayor Bloomberg's team technically no longer exist.
REPORTER: The schools chancellor has urged them to keep meeting over the summer anyway and several have said they will. But one council wants to go a step further.
Members in Manhattan's District 1 passed a resolution asking the chancellor to make them Community School Board members. The school boards existed under the old board of education structure and they had more power over appointments and budgeting. Lisa Donlan is president of the council in District 1.
DONLAN: What we were trying to do was offer to fill in the vacuum until a duly elected local school board can be put into place.
REPORTER: The chancellor's office says there's no provision for converting the councils into boards outside of elections, which can't be held until next May.
