Gay Pride Parade Marks 40 Years After Stonewall Uprising

by Arun Venugopal

NEW YORK, NY June 29, 2009 —The weekend marked the 40th anniversary of the Stonewall uprising and thousands of people filled the streets for the annual Gay Pride parade. Drea Lewis has been attending the pride parade for about 10 years, and the big difference, she says, is how much more diverse it is now.

LEWIS: You know it's Chinese kids down here, African American, Latinos. The youth of today have more options then 40 years ago. And it's because of Stonewall that there are able to go do this.

REPORTER: But she said that while black lesbians are increasingly coming out of the closet, it's still hard for black gay men to do so.
