City to Post Health Warnings Where Cigarettes Sold
by Fred Mogul
NEW YORK, NY June 25, 2009 —The city is moving ahead on a plan to post health warning signs where people buy cigarettes. Assistant Health Commissioner Sarah Perl says the campaign would be the first of its kind in the nation.
PEARL: We’re going to have it at the place where people purchase cigarettes, so that at that critical point of decision, when they’re going to lay out almost $10 for a pack of cigarettes. They’re really going to have to think twice: do I really want to pay $10 for mouth cancer?
REPORTER: Health officials say they're bracing for a possible legal challenge from store owners and tobacco companies.
