Heavy Rains Are Damaging Some Local Crops

WNYC Newsroom

NEW YORK, NY June 24, 2009 —Fruits and vegetables are already hurting this summer, as farmers complain this season's heavy rain is causing their crops to die. They say the produce gets heavy, the roots drown, and the fields are often unmanageable.

REPORTER: But Tycho Dan, who farms organic beans in Ithaca, is thankful for the rain, and looks forward to an abundant harvest.

DAN: We're very happy about the rains right now. Our crops, our sprouts that are coming up, are looking beautiful, beautiful as ever. So we expect a bountiful year.

REPORTER: Dan says beans are a drier crop and take much longer to harvest than most fruits and vegetables, so the rain is helpful.

Many of the farmers who come to the city are from Orange and Sullivan Counties, where there's been about 9 inches of rain this June.
