Freelancers Await Senate Action on Reduced Business Tax

by Ilya Marritz

NEW YORK, NY June 22, 2009 —As the stalemate drags on in Albany a key change to the city tax code hangs in the balance. Groups representing self-employed workers convinced the Mayor, the City Council, and the State Assembly to repeal or reduce the Unincorporated Business Tax for 17,000 freelancers.

Now they're waiting for approval from the state senate, where no bills have been passed since an apparent coup on June 9th. Sara Horowitz is the founder of Freelancers Union.

HOROWITZ: We just want to make sure that freelancers get the money that should be theirs and we are confident that that will happen.

REPORTER: The rollback of the Unincorporated Business Tax will cost the city about $25 million a year.

Horowitz says Freelancers Union had already done extensive outreach to Senators, and is prepared to resume lobbying as soon as the deadlock is broken.
