NEW YORK, NY June 17, 2009 —The City Planning Commission is expected to approve the administration's rezoning proposal for Coney Island this morning. It would create a city-owned amusement park in an area where privately owned parks are dying. But as WNYC's Matthew Schuerman reports, the rezoning process is the easy part.

REPORTER: It's going to be more difficult to get developer Joe Sitt to sell 10 acres along the boardwalk that the Bloomberg administration needs. Sitt's lawyer, Jesse Masyr, argues the city isn't ready to make a deal. It failed this spring to get a state bill that would make the city-owned amusement park feasible. The local assembly member, Alec Brook-Krasny, says he doesn't think the city should take on the risks of the amusement business. For WNYC, I'm Matthew Schuerman.
