Iranian New Yorkers Protest Election Results
by WNYC News
NEW YORK, NY June 16, 2009 —Iranian New Yorkers are protesting the results of the election in Iran. About 25 of them gathered outside the U.N. today, to challenge the re-election of President Mahmoud Ahmedinejad. Protester Sinan, who gave only his first name, says the election results don't reflect what he and other Iranians really want for their country.
SINAN: It undermines the Democratic effort happening today in Iran. It undermines the fact that people are in the streets, they're being beaten by batons, just for the right to have their votes count, one of the most fundamental rights in a modern governmental system.
Results showed Ahmedinejad's opponent, Mir-Hossein Moussavi, lost the vote even in his home region and Sinan says he doesn't believe that's possible. Protesters are calling for a re-vote in Iran, but many expressed doubt it would overturn Ahmedinejad's victory.
