NYC Health Commissioner Defends Budget Plan

by Fred Mogul

NEW YORK, NY May 28, 2009 —City Council Members are vowing to reverse proposed budget cuts that would close or privatize dozens of school-based dental clinics in poor communities.

SEARS: As much as you may think that it’s the wise thing to do, it’s penny-wise and pound-foolish.

Queens Councilwoman Helen Sears says school is the best place for many children to get dental care.

Health Commissioner Dr. Thomas Frieden says they would still get treated, but that private providers – including clinics and hospitals – could do a better job.

FRIEDEN: They can run it. Provide the same or better services. Link to primary care, which we don’t do. And not cost the city money.

REPORTER: Thirteen clinics would be closed but 31 would stay open. Frieden says the move would save $3 million. That's out of $50 million the Health Department needs to cut for the budget year that starts in July.
