2,000 LGBT New Yorkers Plan Trek to Albany
by Kathleen Horan
NEW YORK, NY April 24, 2009 —It looks like the annual trek to Albany tomorrow for Lesbian Gay and Transgender Equality and Justice Day is going to be mighty crowded. More than 2,000 LGBT New Yorkers and their supporters are expected to board buses in the early morning hours to push for the passage of a number of bills in support of gay civil rights- including the "Marriage Equality Bill".
The Empire State Pride Agenda's Alan Van Capelle says it feels like a historic moment in New York for gay rights:
VAN CAPELLE: We have witnessed the victories in Vermont and in Iowa. We were inspired by them, we are motivated by them and we feel like, at this moment, we have the wind at our backs.
Van Capelle says a huge part of the focus of the trip is to lobby legislators who are opposed or haven't yet made up their minds about the bills.
