Tribeca Film Festival Opens

by Allison Lichter

NEW YORK, NY April 21, 2009 —The Tribeca Film Festival opens tomorrow, with 65 feature films from more than 30 countries. Filmmaker Spike Lee is screening two films at the festival for the first time this year. He says festivals are still the most important way for young filmmakers to get their work out to bigger audiences.

LEE: Particularly if you're coming out of film school, a student, you need...no one would know what you can do if you don't have your work seen.

This year's Tribeca Film Festival is presenting the work of other well-known moviemakers -- including world premieres from Woody Allen, Steven Soderburgh and Barry Levinson. Fewer films will be presented than in year's past. And organizers say they hope that a number of free events will continue to draw new audiences to the festival.
