NEW YORK, NY April 09, 2009 —A whale spotted near the Verrazano Narrows Bridge this morning has headed towards more open waters near Coney Island. Spokeswoman Terry Frady with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration says this is whale migration season and it's not unusual to see them in New York. She has some advice for potential whale watchers:

FRADY: Make sure you stay a good distance away so that you're not in any way interfering with the whale or interfering with people that might be trying to do the assessment.

Frady says experts are still trying to identify whether this whale is the Hump Back whale spotted yesterday near Rockaway beach in Queens, or the Right Whale, which is more susceptible to injury from boats.
