NEW YORK, NY March 25, 2009 —New Jersey Governor Jon Corzine has been given the authority to force state workers to take unpaid furloughs. The state's Civil Service Commission adopted an emergency rule today, during a meeting that drew an angry crowd of several hundred union members. Four people were arrested. Commission members say the state's deepening financial problems made their action necessary. Corzine has called on public employees to accept a pay freeze, and to take one furlough day a month, starting in July. He's threatening to layoff 7,000 workers, if he can't get $500 million in union concessions.
