Fenugreek: Not Such a Scary Spice

NEW YORK, NY February 06, 2009 —It was the talk of the town yesterday. Mayor Bloomberg did the big reveal at a highly choreographed news conference, flanked by scientists and experts from across the city. The source of that sweet maple syrup odor: a food processing plant across the river in New Jersey. If humidity and wind were just right, you cold smell it in Manhattan. The culprit was a harmless spice known as fenugreek. Food writer Kathy Gunst joins WNYC's Ricahrd Hake with more on the elusive spice fenugreek.
