NEW YORK, NY January 13, 2009 —As Bronx Borough President Adolfo Carrion is poised to take a job with the Obama administration, the jockeying has already started for his current job.

Carrion's reported departure has pitted the Bronx's most prominent political families against each other, as they fight to get the borough president's post. Those who've expressed interest include City Councilman Joel Rivera, son of recently deposed Bronx Democratic County Chairman Jose Rivera, and Assembylman Ruben Diaz Jr., son of State Senator Ruben Diaz Senior. Newly elected Senator Pedro Espada, Jr. also says he may consider a run for the job.

They'll all have to compete in a special election 45 days after the mayor declares the seat is vacant. The special election does not exclude anyone from any party, and interested candidates must gather 4,000 valid signatures.

Insiders say Carrion will reportedly be accepting an Urban Policy post with the Obama Administration, but Carrion has not publicly said what the new appointment would be.
