Paterson and Corzine Ask for Bigger Federal Stimulus Package
WNYC Newsroom
NEW YORK, NY January 03, 2009 —New York and New Jersey Governors David Paterson and Jon Corzine want the federal stimulus package to be much larger than anything that's been proposed so far.
REPORTER: They're asking for $1 trillion to be spent on everything from road construction to college grants, areas where the states are cutting, because of serious budget shortfalls this year. Corzine says education spending makes up about half of New Jersey's budget, and is vulnerable to cuts.
CORZINE: That's where we're going to end up going where the money is, and it's going to be extremely hurtful.
REPORTER: Corzine and Paterson joined governors from Wisconsin, Massachusetts and Ohio yesterday on a conference call; they all said their states are facing unprecedented budget shortfalls that will require deep cuts to services and education.
