Great Organ Returns to St. John the Divine
by WNYC Newsroom
NEW YORK, NY November 28, 2008 —After seven years, the Great Organ at St. John the Divine Cathedral is back. The 118-stop pipe organ was damaged by smoke in a 2001 fire that destroyed parts of the cathedral. Eric Johnson managed the restoration of the 97-year-old organ.
JOHNSON: Since the end of July, we've been just non-stop, six days a week, putting it back up in the chambers overhead and we're getting to the point now where it's just starting to play, work the bugs through.
REPORTER: The organ was sent to specialists in Missouri to be cleaned, and then trucked back to New York over the summer. It will be played during a re-dedication service at the cathedral Sunday morning.
