NYC to Require Bike Storage for New Buildings
by Matthew Schuerman
NEW YORK, NY November 10, 2008 —Bicycle commuting is going up across the city, and the Bloomberg administration wants to make life easier for New Yorkers who get to work on two wheels. The Department of City Planning will propose new regulations today to require locked bike rooms in almost all new buildings. Director Amanda Burden, says the idea came out of the PlaNYC 2030 initiative.
BURDEN: We have found that the primary obstacle to getting people on to bikes is providing a secure place to leave your bike, long term, at home and at work. so that's what this proposal is going to do.
REPORTER: The Real Estate Board of New York says it wants any requirement to be in line with the actual demand for bike parking spaces. The city planning commission and the City Council will need to approve the regulations, which could be in place in time for biking season next summer.
