Dr. Atomic Hits the Met

by Lara Pellegrinelli

NEW YORK, NY October 13, 2008 —It's an opera about the atomic bomb and a single, tension-filled day that led up to the first nuclear test. Doctor Atomic opens tonight at The Metropolitan Opera. Created by Pulitzer-prize winning composer John Adams and librettist Peter Sellars, Dr. Atomic is the story of Robert Oppenheimer, the lead scientist on the Manhattan Project. Not only will it be the work's New York premiere, but the much anticipated debut of a brand new production—unusual for a piece that's only three years-old. Lara Pellegrinelli filed this report on the Met's latest theatrical experiment.
