Mayoral Hopeful Expresses Distaste Over Repealing Term Limits Law
by Anna Boiko
NEW YORK, NY October 08, 2008 —Congressman Anthony Weiner says the move to extend term limits is vulnerable to a court challenge.
Joining him was Richard Emery, an expert on charter law. Emery says that even though it's legal for the City Council to change term limits without a public vote, it still raises ethical questions.
EMERY: It is wrong as a matter of fundamental principle that people who will have their pensions enhanced and their jobs extended are voting on their own longevity.
REPORTER: He says the mayor's bill could be seen as an abuse of power, and challenged in court for that reason.
Emery helped dissolve the city's Board of Estimate in a 1989 Supreme Court Case.
