NEW YORK, NY October 03, 2008 —The Mets collapsed. The Yankees never came together and for the first time in more than a decade there is no baseball in New York this October. That means fans here may focus on other sports a little earlier than usual this year: basketball, football, maybe even hockey! The NHL hopes so. It's trying all sorts of new things to attract new fans including playing games outdoors and starting the season in Europe, where the Rangers begin on Saturday. WNYC's Dan Blumberg and Lynn Zinser of the New York Times preview the season.
