Coalition Prepares to Fight Proposed Changes to Term Limits
by Bob Hennelly
NEW YORK, NY October 02, 2008 —In anticipation of Mayor Bloomberg's expected announcement that he wants to overturn term limits so he can run for four more years in office, a coalition opposing the move is gaining steam.
The head of the good government group Citizen's Union says he is working to unite labor and reform groups to oppose the mayor's move. Dick Dadey says he wants to uphold the two referendum votes supporting a two-term limit to pubic office. And CWA Local 1180 President Arthur Cheliotes says he considers the effort apparently underway to undo term limits as undemocratic.
The loose coalition, which also includes Common Cause and NYPIRG, is planning to lobby council members to vote down any extension or repeal. And chances are good a legal case will follow any legislative move by the council. Still, the mayor has yet to publicly comment on the third term question.
