City Makes it Easier to Ticket Box-Blockers

by Arun Venugopal

NEW YORK, NY September 10, 2008 —Don't block that box. At noon today, the city made it much easier to ticket drivers who clog up intersections.

REPORTER: Earlier only police officers could hand out the $115 tickets, but over the summer the governor signed a law allowing all traffic enforcement agents to write the summons as well. Mayor Bloomberg says the new measure will reduce traffic congestion.

BLOOMBERG: You cannot block the box. If you can't get into the intersection, stop before you get there. I know it's annoying, but you're just going to create a much bigger traffic jam for everyone else, including yourself.

REPORTER: The NYPD ticketed 14 thousand drivers for blocking the box last year - the city says that figure's likely to go up sharply.
