Councilman Koppell Promises Term Limits Bill
by Caitlin Kenney
NEW YORK, NY September 05, 2008 —Bronx City Councilman Oliver Koppell says if Council Speaker Christine Quinn doesn't move on term limits, he'll to introduce a bill to change them.
Koppell says the current two term limit "robs the public of a choice," and he wants the city's elected officials to be able to serve three full terms.
Speaker Quinn has said she opposes term limits, but she has not ruled out supporting a campaign to extend them. And Mayor Michael Bloomberg has said he would consider changing the law, if a bill was put before him.
If the law isn't changed, Bloomberg, Quinn and 34 other council members will be out of a job by the end of next year.
