Kids at Y Get to Swim With Phelps
by Cindy Rodriguez
NEW YORK, NY August 29, 2008 —A few dozen New York City kids got the chance to swim with 14-time Olympic Gold Medalist Michael Phelps Thursday. The star athlete was in Manhattan promoting a swimming program at the YMCA in Chelsea. Phelps is on a mission to make swimming more accessible to all kids, especially in urban areas where pools are rare.
PHELPS: Drowning is a very big thing it's a big problem that we have in the U.S. and with me being able to have kids be water safe you know I think that's one of the most important things. Because you know like I said that's how I got started in this sport and I just stuck with it.
REPORTER: Phelps will remain in the city a few days preparing for his hosting gig on Saturday Night Live in September.
