Councilman: Corporate Sponsorships of Subway Stations OK
by Matthew Schuerman
NEW YORK, NY August 19, 2008 —A City Council Member thinks it would be worth it to let corporations pay the Metropolitan Transportation Authority to put their logos on subway stations.
Joseph Addabbo, who is running for state Senate, says the idea is just one way to lessen the need for a fare hike, which the MTA has proposed to help close an anticipated 900 million dollar gap next year.
Addabbo said critics of corporate sponsorships would eventually come around.
ADDABBO: You know, will they complain about corporate sponsorship or would they rather see a fare hike? I think they would rather see corporate sponsorship than a fare hike.
REPORTER: Spokesman Jeremy Soffin, says the MTA is considering selling naming rights to stations as one way to raise revenue.
