Demonstrators Protest Chinese Occupation of Tibet

WNYC Newsroom

NEW YORK, NY August 11, 2008 —As the Beijing Olympics wrapped up its third day, a couple of hundred demonstrators gathered in Union Square yesterday to protest what they consider to be the Chinese occupation of Tibet. Many of them said they are not watching the games on TV. Tenzin Dolkar is a recent college grad whose grandparents fled Tibet in 1959.

DOLKAR: If we can't as a world boycott it, as an individual person, as a person of conscience, I will boycott it.

REPORTER: The organizers say they will hold daily demonstrations in favor of Tibetan independence outside the Chinese consulate for the duration of the Olympics.
